The deep drainage (or No. 9) level at Cwmrheidol. The tunnel drained mineworkings in which the usual lead and zinc ores were accompanied by the unstable iron sulphide, marcasite. This decomposes into a toxic, metal-rich acidic (pH 2-3!) solution. On reaching the open air, bright orange ochre precipitates from it. This photo was taken in dry conditions in the summer of 1992.
