In 1993, it was decided that a dangerous buildup of acidic minewater behind a collapse just inside No. 9 level needed to be tackled, before it burst out and killed off the river. The water behind the blockage was slowly pumped out and treated with powdered limestone. Here is the entrance with the pumping-pipes heading further in.
