At Porth Dinllaen, on the Lleyn Peninsula, there are spectacular outcrops of pillow-basalts. Erupted underwater, in late Precambrian times, the lavas rapidly solidified into these weird tube-like stuctures, each about 0.5 metres across. Jasper fills gaps between the tubes. The lavas are a block, or clast, within the Gwna Melange, one of Wales' most spectacular rock-units. The melange is a massive underwater debris-flow and individual clasts within it can be in excess of a kilometre across! Product number JM0487. Email me about this image: click HERE.
