At Lavernock Point, on the Bristol Channel coast just SW of Cardiff, the cliffs record a major environmental change over 180 million years ago. The desert conditions of the Triassic Period, resulting in the deposition of red marls, gave way in latest Triassic (Rhaetic) times to marine conditions, in which the overlying grey-brown strata were deposited.
