The Plynlimon massif: the western flanks are generally rolling hills but are incised deeply by rivers in places. The Leri, an important tributory of the Dyfi (due to it being artificially connected to the Dyfi Estuary in the 19th Century!) has cut a particularly impressive slot, forming the crags and gorge of Craig-y-Pistyll, threaded by this precipitous pathway.
